COLLECTOR INTERVIEW: Sujit Rajani
What do you collect? How long have you been collecting? How did you get into it?
I collect mostly action figures from a wide variety of companies, Happy meal toys and also sometimes die cast cars. As far as i remember, I started my collection from 1992 with Gi Joes and Masters Of The Universe (MOTU). My dad bought me a bunch of Joes and two vehicles on my seventh birthday and that started the juggernaut for me.
What is the holy grail of your collection? Or if you still looking for it then what it is?
I was always a big fan of MOTU Filmation series and cherished the vintage Masters Of The Universe figures. Most of those figures were either lost or broken by the time I was an adult. Then along came Masters Of The Universe Classics line and that made me feel like a child again and thus the Masters Of The Universe Classic He-Man and Battlecat are still considered by me as the holy grail of my collection.
What is the most surprising or outrageous collecting story you have heard?
I watch a show on a channel named History TV 18 called “Extreme Collectors”. There was a woman featured in that show who had the most marvellous Wonder Woman collection ever. I think she had put in 30 years and thousands of dollars into it and upon revaluation her money had doubled because of the rare figures she had from that era. Enjoyed watching that collection and was really amazed.
If you could pick one item from your collection to keep, what would it be? And why?
I seriously hope that i never get to face that situation but if i have to i will choose the Figma Ironman mk 7 because it is not only an exceptionally good figure but also the first gift by my wife to me, so it holds a very special place in my heart.
If you could have one item out of someone else’s collection, what would that be?
Every collector has a different type of collection and that means almost everyday i see something new and cool from a fellow collector which i eventually want to add to my wishlist. So nothing specific as such.
How has the collecting scene changed in the last 5 years? Do you like that or not?
I had no idea as to how to import things from abroad about 5 years ago but now i think almost everyone has an idea and are importing conveniently. Sites like Amazon and eBay have made it possible for us collectors in India to get everything at a decent price and i absolutely love this. Even if you want to avoid importing, sources like superherotoystore, curious, entertainment store etc. have eased the pain of collecting for us collectors.
How do you see, or hope to see the scene changing in 5 years time?
I think, there will be a big change in a collector’s life in the next 5 years to come. Collectors in India will be having bigger and better collections plus I think we will get to see a lot more skills evolving like toy photography and customising.
What advice would you give a new collector starting out today?
My advice would be to choose carefully, share the experiences and creativity with your friends and most importantly have tons of fun while doing it.
