COLLECTORS INTERVIEW: Harshal Ashar
What do you collect? How long have you been collecting? How did you get into it?
What is the holy grail of your collection?
What is the most surprising or outrageous collecting story you have heard?
I haven’t really heard of many collecting stories, let alone an outrageous one. To be recalling one from my personal archive, this incident happened when I was in Austria in 2016. With a bare minimum shopping time in hand, I ventured out alone to a mall which was a good 15-20 minutes away from where my folks were waiting. Thinking I had enough money, I waltzed into a shop of my obvious interest. I had made up my mind to purchase a fully functional miniature BB-8 droid from Star Wars. I decided to look around the store thinking that the droid was well within my spending limit. When I was about to make the purchase, I realized I had misread the price tag! After I emptied my pockets, I was livid to be one Euro short. I had to walk back to secure the last Euro, walk again to the mall and walk back to the designated meeting point. The 4 trips were totally worth it!
If you could pick one item from your collection to keep, what would it be? And why?
It would certainly be my Luke Skywalker lightsaber from Return of the Jedi. I got it as a present when I was 5 in 1997. I’ve held on to it since and I always will.
If you could have one item out of someone else’s collection, what would that be?
It would probably be The Dark Knight Armory by Hot Toys. Or a Lego Death Star. Both of them are ridiculously priced, albeit value for money.
How has the collecting scene changed in the last 5 years? Do you like that or not?
How do you see, or hope to see the scene changing in 5 years time?
What advice would you give a new collector starting out today?
I’ll keep it simple. If you find something you like, purchase it, subject to finances. If you hold back on your decision thinking that a particular product is not fitting into your current collection or you wish to come back to it when you start collecting from that franchise, the product might no longer be available. It could be available or something better might come along. You never know. You’ll have to roll a dice on that. However, if you come across something exclusive and limited edition, you might want to get your hands on it.
