COLLECTORS INTERVIEW: Sajid Hussain
What do you collect? How long have you been collecting? How did you get into it?
As collection is concerned, I drool for mostly anything related to comics, as the years have passed by I have been collecting comics, figures, posters, badges, Posters, have loads of books and novels mostly horror, I am a huge manga fan too had tons of bayblades from which only 1 is left, was a series of bakugan, the bakugans I owned are still with me and have been kept carefully , have connected to books and comics since 2001, at that time there were Gotham comics and goosebumps/Stephen king, most of them occupied a lot of space for which most of them got misplaced and chucked out, Action figures started when I was a kid. My dad used to bring every toy related to superheroes available at that time, stacks of happy meal toys which i still do have.I stopped briefly in the years that went by in terms of figures and comics. But then it all started again in the past 2-3years for comics and a year or two for Figures, actually the pace of my collection has increased compared to the past years. Trying in to recollect the gems that I have lost and didn’t care for.
What is the holy grail of your collection?
The holy grail of my collection is my Play arts kai wild west Batman. The detailing put into the figure, the look and the feel of it makes me feel a bit proud of owning it
Though my parents are not that much into stuff like this but this one’s their favourite too was a tough call between him and my magneto and not talking about my zombie magneto would hurt his zombie’s heart he is as handsome as none of my figures could ever be.
What is the most surprising or outrageous collecting story you have heard?
There used to be a series” Extreme collectors”. There was a man who had all the walls in his house, right up from his main door to all his bedrooms, drawing room, covered full of comics, some rare ones too, in his interview, I remember him saying a few of them were worth thousands of dollars, limited issues, signed copies. This was the time where I actually said “someday”
If you could pick one item from your collection to keep, what would it be? And why?
Hope I never actually come across such a situation..but if I do. It will be my SH figure arts Son Goku figure. Many would feel odd listening to this, but feels like I have a connection with it, Goku always somehow inspires me, his character personality, physique. Yup. He’s the one that I would choose
If you could have one item out of someone else’s collection, what would that be?
The choice actually keeps changing as people post their figures or the new ones that come out but just to answer it, would love to have the mafex batpod in certain from Mithun and maybe the Jack niche. Joker owned by Ankush.
How has the collecting scene changed in the last 5 years? Do you like that or not?
The last 5years have actually made it easy for us collectors, the availability of stuff related to comics has increased tremendously, collected volumes, action figures, are easily available on amazon, flipkart.. Yes, most of the products dont release in our country, some get introduced late. But then there are people who have helped us in not feeling the drawback by opening sites like thesuperherotoystore, the entertainment store. So yup, i like the way stuff has changed. Changed for good
How do you see, or hope to see the scene changing in 5 years time?
In the coming 5 years i really hope the way our customs work changes. They have their own crazy way of dealing with imports, they actually dont care about the fact that someone has actually paid for it and is waiting for godknows how many months for it. This stops me from importing things that i really want. Its a kind of a fear developed..
I hope we get Xmstudios.. Slideshow collectables shifting their production in india. Its a lot to ask for but whats in thinking and hoping for it. Iam working on my toyphotography skills, so hope at least this excels in the coming years
What advice would you give a new collector starting out today?
There is nothing as a new collector, someone somewhere actually has the love of something that he keeps with him and loves increasing it in number, as a matter of fact some collect money :p .. As figures are concerned, it is all about the purchasing power, as a student i collect form my pocket money or ask from my parents, but then its about even drawing a line ( which even iam working at) maybe 1 fig a month, be it a hottoy or a hasbro that depends on person to person. Second comes is impulsive buying that iam a supporter and even against it. Sometimes i hit a jackpot and sometimes i feel the regret of not waiting for what i wanted. So. In the end everything comes down to enjoy collecting, what ever, how ever planned or not, its all about the joy it brings to you.
