COLLECTORS INTERVIEW: Shayne Rana
Profession: Content Head
What do you collect? How long have you been collecting? How did you get into it?
I prefer to collect old-school, classic style action figures and retro movie memorabilia, but my first love will always be comic books. You might say I’ve been collecting since I was 3, but I’ve only really gotten into it over the last 15 years. when I started earning my own money. 😀
I’ve always loved reading and am a massive Vidiot, and growing up with the family that collected books, comic books, and toys; it was a natural progression.
What is the holy grail of your collection?
Hmmmm…. My goal is to complete the Marvel Origins statue set, of which I have 6 pieces and need a couple more. But the grail of my collection is a signed copy of ‘The Avengers First Appearance’ reprint, by Stan, The Man, Lee, a wedding present from my awesome wife!
What is the most surprising or outrageous collecting story you have heard?
I’ve heard some pretty crazy stories, but nothing that really stands out.
If you could pick one item from your collection to keep, what would it be? And why?
Ahhhh, that would HAVE to be the signed copy of the Avengers. I’d part with the clothes on my back, but not that!
If you could have one item out of someone else’s collection, what would that be?
It would have to say Mayank Khurana’s Bowen Design Thor with the swinging hammer.
How has the collecting scene changed in the last 5 years? Do you like that or not?
I’m quite impressed with how the legitimacy of what we do has evolved over the last few years. With the introduction of Comic-Con to the Indian Pop Culture scene to people like Ankush Chugh who started up AFFI and a few others like me, a handful of collectors, kicking it off, It’s a great experience. I’m overwhelmed to be able to connect with so many like-minded people that I once thought were only myths. We’re out of the shadows now and are out in the open, basking in the knowledge that we’re not alone and are now considered experts in the field for the new generation of comic book fans, thanks to the movies.
How do you see, or hope to see the scene changing in 5 years time?
I’m hoping that the international community of retailers, manufacturers et al will see how rapidly this segment is growing and finally decide to give us easier access to the prizes we covet from afar. Ordering online is great, but can be at a massive expense.
What advice would you give a new collector starting out today?
I’d say – budget yourself. This hobby is driven by a passion that’s hard to stop and can give your bank account a massive aneurysm. Save up for what you really want and don’t go overboard.
