COLLECTORS INTERVIEW: Hetanshu Bharadiya
City: Rajkot, Gujarat
Profession: Student (Std. 12)
What do you collect? How long have you been collecting? How did you get into it?
I collect Star Wars, DC, Marvel and Doctor Who stuff (Mostly Star Wars, DC and Doctor Who), which ranges from action figures to posters. Technically, I’ve been collecting since childhood. But that’s stashed away into the cupboards. I restarted collecting in 9th grade, which began with the Star Wars Black Series Luke and Obi-Wan followed by the Flash figure. I have always loved superheroes, and what better than to collect awesome stuff, pose it around and just relive the time of absolute awesome.
What is the holy grail of your collection?
Dang, that’s a difficult question. I have two holy grails, if that’s fine! The Hot Toys Christopher Reeve Superman figure, and Sideshow 1/6 scale Batman figure.
What is the most surprising or outrageous collecting story you have heard?
Definitely, Jerry Greene’s Jerni Collection which is estimated to earn a whopping 10 million dollars! I lack superlatives to describe this achievement!
If you could pick one item from your collection to keep, what would it be? And why?
Oh! That’s a toughie! But I guess I would slightly edge towards the Sideshow Batman figure. It was a part of the 10th Grade Board Exam culmination surprise, bought from Dubai, and will always serve as a reminder of the amount of pains my parents took to set up the Dubai surprise just on the very day my exams ended, and I will always be indebted to them for appreciating my interest in collection of cool stuff!
If you could have one item out of someone else’s collection, what would that be?
Well, I did see this AMAZING Batman v/s Killer Croc statue of a friend of mine.
How has the collecting scene changed in the last 5 years? Do you like that or not?
Oh, the market in India is increasing exponentially! There seems to pop-up a new interest into collectors every day! And this has inspired a massive change in the availability of action figures and statues in India. 5 years back, I was just in grade 7, I wasn’t much of a collector back then, and I got my first figure in 9th. I had to go as far as London to get it. Star Wars The Black Series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Which I couldn’t find anywhere in India!
How do you see, or hope to see the scene changing in 5 years time?
What advice would you give a new collector starting out today?
Don’t let anyone look down upon you for being a collector! It’s a passion, a love, that’s something personal, so don’t expect everyone to understand. But those of your friends and family who do appreciate them should be really appreciated.
(P.S. The lightsaber and the Captain America shield were built at my dad’s factory.)
