COSPLAYER INTERVIEW: Hyde & Seek Cosplay
Name: Gabrielle Hyde-Smith
Profession: Ballet Teacher
Why do you cosplay?
I began cosplay because I’ve always loved costumes thanks to growing up as a dancer and always performing. I never imagine my interest in comics and games would collide with my love my costumes but when living in the states I was lucky enough to score SDCC tickets and was blown away by everyone’s cosplay. I came home two weeks later and attended OZCC where I did my first ever cosplay – and where I discovered the cosplay community. So now I cosplay for two reasons:
- love of dressing up
- the community!
What was your latest Cosplay?
My latest cosplay was Emily from the Corpse Bride. First time I had ever used body paint and was really happy with how it all turned out.
How long did it take you to make this cosplay? Were there challenges in the design?
It took me a month to make it. But mostly because I work long hours in the week and hand stitching the lace took forever!
Your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far?
My favorite is a tie between my Ballerina Captain America and my Post Apocalyptic Wonder Woman. Cap was just fun and pretty and combined by ballet with my geek side. But Wonder Woman I felt so bad-ass in!
What’s your favorite convention?
I have a soft spot for OZ Comic Con Sydney. It was my first con cosplaying at and I’ve always found the atmosphere there really kind and supportive.
How long have you been into cosplay?
I’ve been cosplaying for 3 years
What was your first costume? Advice for anyone just starting out?
My first costume was New 52 Wonder Woman. It was a disaster, I made it the night before and was taped into it. I kept falling out of it – but at the time I didn’t care, I was having so much fun. For anyone starting out I’d say cosplay characters you love, it doesn’t matter about being the best or even being good, it’s about having fun. Also whilst there are tutorials for everything out there, if you’re looking to make something yourself the best way to learn is to try things yourself!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Inspiration comes from everywhere! But mostly comics and fan-art! Fan-art is definitely an underrated source of inspiration.
What are you working on next?
Fem Buzz Lightyear! It’s been in the earlier stages of progress for a year now but I’m determined to finish it before starting any new projects.

By day I’m a boring old Web Developer, but as the sun goes down, I’m a SUPERHERO. Well not really I just dress up and pretend to be one.
“Centurions” was my favorite cartoon growing up and I name all my possessions “Shadow” because I can’t afford a Husky.
I camp in Games like it’s nobody’s business, and if you’ve got a problem with that I’ve got two words for ya “I’m Sorry”, cause you’re a noob.
