COSPLAYER INTERVIEW: Junaid Khan
Profession: Civil Engineer
City: Islamabad, Pakistan
Why do you cosplay?
I was always into doing out of the box stuff, loved playing video games and watching cartoons. Started cosplaying just to see what it really is about but kept on doing it after meeting different people. It is mostly to do with hanging out and have fun with the like-minded people.
What was your latest Cosplay?
My latest cosplay was Flynn Rider (Eugene Fitzherbert) from Tangled (Event AnimeCon’16). The character was favourite of my cousin so she asked me to try it as she said I look like him & even my smoulder. Too bad my Rapunzel bailed on me.
How long did it take you to make this cosplay? Were there challenges in the design?
I never go for heavy props cosplay. I just utilise the items available to me at home, like growing out hair instead of a wig to make it look natural. So it took me an hour to adjust the top that’s it.
Your favourite cosplay you’ve done so far?
Dexter from Dexter’s Laboratory as it used to be one of my fav shows as a kid. But the one that got most attention was Flynn Rider, so it’s a fan favourite now.
What’s your favourite convention?
Its Twincon, I did my first cosplay in that event too. I was not into comics and Anime at that time. And also because of its huge cosplayers following here in Pakistan.
How long have you been into cosplay?
3 years, started from 2014 when the first Twincon was organised, that too in my university by friends. And that’s when I started making AMVs too.
What was your first costume? Advice for anyone just starting out?
The first costume was Okabe Rintarou from Stein’s Gate for first ever event in Islamabad (Twincon’14). Didn’t know much about anime, had just watched 5 episodes of this series. I wasn’t planning on going to the event but then I grabbed the labcoat and ran out to attend the event. It’s not one of my good ones but people liked it hence I continued.
People doing it for the first time are always nervous about what will others think of it, or the heavy props etc. Well, it’s more about having fun together than being judged. But let’s be honest everyone want to look good, hence choose the cosplay based on your physique, items available to you, etc. It’s not an expensive hobby if you go for the characters that suit you.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I’ll be honest I am not a big otaku or a geek but I still like cosplaying. It comes from the games I play, the people I occasionally hang out with, just to get out of that boring studious life. I am also a straight three times AMV (Anime Music Video) competition winner here in Islamabad at cons, hence I participate not only to cosplay but to show the AMVs I made in my spare time.
What are you working on next?
I have 3 cosplays ready. I am planning to do Nick with my friend who will do Judy (Zootopia). But I might go for Sebastian (Black Butler) or Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter) depending on the event.

By day I’m a boring old Web Developer, but as the sun goes down, I’m a SUPERHERO. Well not really I just dress up and pretend to be one.
“Centurions” was my favorite cartoon growing up and I name all my possessions “Shadow” because I can’t afford a Husky.
I camp in Games like it’s nobody’s business, and if you’ve got a problem with that I’ve got two words for ya “I’m Sorry”, cause you’re a noob.
