COSPLAYER INTERVIEW: Mahnoor Haider
Profession: Design Student
Why do you cosplay?
I’ve always been a creative person and loved making things and when I found out about a con being held in Pakistan I jumped at the opportunity. My first experience with cosplaying was such a great one; people were appreciating my props and costume! It’s an amazing feeling also met a lot of great people in the community I got hooked. It’s become a sort of an outlet for me to show off my skills as well as showing my love for my love for my favourite characters. Putting on my costume, going to cons, taking pictures and making videos with my fellow cosplayers and overall just having fun with your character is something I look forward to now and become a very big part of me.
What was your latest Cosplay?
The latest one I did was a Genderbend version of Tamaki from Ouran Highschool Host Club which I did with my friend Arij Malik who cosplayed as kyoya.
How long did it take you to make this cosplay? Were there challenges in the design?
This was one of my easier cosplays and I can’t really put a time on it since most of the things I used for this cosplay were already present in my closet. I bought the coat for it online and for the skirt, I used one of my old longer skirts and altered it to be shorter.
Your favourite cosplay you’ve done so far?
My favourite has got to be spell theif lux. I love making props for cosplays and for this one the book, satchel and staff and all handmade from scratch. The hood was made at home and the designs on the hood were also hand-drawn. It was one of my most challenging cosplays to make and it’s the one I put the most effort into.
What’s your favourite convention?
Twincon no questions asked! It’s one of the biggest and best cons in the twin cities with the largest turnout and best cosplays. It was one of the first cons I attended and gets better and better every year! If anyone wants to attend a con here in Pakistan I’d suggest making Twincon their first.
How long have you been into cosplay?
Well… I always loved to dress up since I was young, especially at the fashion show part of MUNs but my first actual cosplay was in 2015 so I’ve been into for 3 years!
What was your first costume? Advice for anyone just starting out?
My first cosplay was at Twincon 2015 where I went as Blood moon Akali. Lots of trial and errors in making props for this cosplay!
Advice….well I’ll have to say no matter how bad you think your cosplay is don’t give up! We all start out somewhere. Do not spray paint styrofoam props directly…. Learned that one the hard way. Makeup is a big part of cosplay so if you all are putting time and effort into your clothes give some attention to your face. A little bit of makeup can do wonders to add to your character. This is especially towards the guys. Makeup isn’t only for girls! And lastly, take pictures! I feel so bad there aren’t a lot of pictures of my first cosplay so take lots and create memories.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
For me, inspiration can come from anywhere! But it’s mostly from other cosplayers and artists that I follow. Their works makes me want to make them as well.
What are you working on next?
I have a few cosplays I have on my to-do list which include Lightning from FFXIII, Noiz from DMMD, Rainbowdash from MLP and Start Guardian Lux from LOL. But for now, my main focus is on Yang Xiao Long from RWBY.

In short, I notice things for a living and try to point them out to people. I write about movies, television especially superhero films, pop culture and Hollywood. When not listening to start-up pitches, I play with puppies and pretend to like craft beer.
