COSPLAYER INTERVIEW: Shafqat Aziz
Profession: Former School Teacher
Why do you cosplay?
I cosplay because it is my escape from reality. I do lead a very busy life being a law student racing to finish his degree as fast as possible and its fun sometimes to forget about all that stress sometimes. Different people fanboy about their fandoms and favorite characters, some draw, some collect merchandises and collectibles, some collect comic books or mangas. I decided to cosplay the characters which I like or can relate to but mostly I do cosplay characters which inspire me with their way of thinking which I can actually apply in real life to reach my goals successfully and efficiently.
What was your latest Cosplay?
My last cosplay was of Izuna Uchiha from Naruto (Madara Uchiha’s Brother).
How long did it take you to make this cosplay? Were there challenges in the design?
It took me a week to make the costume as I had everything else (Example-Wig, shoes, etc) from my past cosplays of Sasuke Uchiha and members of the ANBU Black Ops from Naruto (Izuna and Sasuke looks 99% same too btw). Actually, I made this costume a year ago but never got time to use it as I was deeply busy with my studies after a certain Anime Convention hosts canceled their events 3 times over 3 months, I did plan on doing my Izuna cosplay there.
The challenge with this cosplay was the lack of content to find reference photos for the character. In the manga and anime, he was an amazing Ninja despite not having many pages or screen time dedicated to him. I do have a tendency to cosplay underrated characters like him. So I had to dig in deep to the game where there were many skins of every character and I finally found one of Izuna I could have made and ended up making it the next week.
Your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far?
I have done quite a few cosplays so far but my all-time favorite shall be my first cosplay of Robin just because of all the memories I hold dear to me related to that cosplay. Besides that, my Sasuke Uchiha cosplay was a challenge I took upon myself and put in a lot of hard work on it to make it better so that’s another favorite cosplay of mine.
What’s your favorite convention?
Ummad-JCC Comic Con
How long have you been into cosplay?
Into my 4th year of cosplaying now, though I am yet to do a cosplay in 2017.
What was your first costume? Advice for anyone just starting out?
My first costume was that of a Red Arrow costume made from old fabrics I was about to throw away.My advice to anyone starting to cosplay would be for them to cosplay characters they love and characters that inspire them and to stay away from the mindset of cosplaying characters they have no idea about but they cosplay them anyway in hopes of gaining popularity. I never did a good Robin or Nightwing cosplay, in fact, they were both budget costumes made from old shirts with the help of my close friends, they were nowhere near good but people who met me at the conventions instantly liked me simply because they saw what a big fan I was of my characters (I got to know this much later from people who were eyeing me back then but are my good friends now).
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Uchiha Clan (Naruto), Survey Corps (Attack on Titan), Blue Lantern Corps (Green Lantern Comics), Dick Grayson (DC Comics), Peter Parker (Marvel Comics), Jamie Lannister and House Lannister (Game of Thrones), Ramsay Bolton and House Bolton (Game of Thrones), Robb Stark (Game of Thrones, Slytherin House (Harry Potter), Ravenclaw House (Harry Potter) Professor Snape (Harry Potter), Steven Stone (Pokemon Emerald), Alain (Pokemon X and Y), Yamato (Digimon), Starscream (Transformers), Hot Shot (Transformers), Jet Fire (Transformers), Ghost (Call of Duty).
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on improving my past cosplays of Nightwing, Spiderman and Sasuke Uchiha. Besides those, I am working on cosplaying a few more characters from DC Comics, Harry Potter, Pokemon and Naruto.
