COSPLAYER INTERVIEW: Rohan Ramakrishna
Profession: Under Grad Architecture student.
Why do you cosplay?
Started off with my whole anime and comic obsession. I remember how excited I was for the first con I attended, back in 2011. Back then, the whole comic convention idea was alien and almost not a thing that would happen in India. I saw a few cosplayers from a then young BAC( Bangalore Anime Club) donning their Cool Naruto and Bleach cosplays, that got me all amped up and determined to join their ranks for the next event.
The whole experience of bringing a character from an artist’s imagination to life. Interacting with fans and meeting more like-minded people is too amazing to be put into words. Total bucket list material.
What was your latest Cosplay?
I did a Vega, from the vintage Street fighter series for the recent con in town, and a Scorpion from the Latest Mortal Kombat Series before that one.
How long did it take you to make this cosplay? Were there challenges in the design?
Vega took me a month and a half, the scorpion took over 4-5 months of revamping, fixes and upgrades. The designs were challenging indeed because I decide to learn a bit of tailoring to save up on a few bucks instead of getting ripped off by conventional tailors. I had an idea of bringing the whole “Spear hook” move to life and wanted to make retractable spear hooks couldn’t hit the spot, though. I even went an extra mile to fashion out custom leather boots and saved up majorly on that.
Your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far?
Definitely the Scorpion, that costume took some sweat and blood out of me, but rewarded me equally. I won two contests with that and quite a lot of recognition all over the community.
What’s your favorite convention?
Favorite con would be Conventions hosted by Comic Con India. Huge crowd, a congression of all the best cosplayers from all across India. I mostly love the fans and crowd response at these conventions, their excitement and enthusiasm is a major moral booster for all cosplayers, beginners and veterans alike.
How long have you been into cosplay?
Almost 4 years now.
What was your first costume? Advice for anyone just starting out?
First fail costume was a Grey full buster from Fairy Tale, mostly crashed because I picked something too complex for a beginner. First successful one was Rorschach, from the Watchmen series.
Major advice would be, pick simple characters for starters. Don’t always go for the heroes, bad guys make amazing cosplays and the fan response will blow your mind. Research a bit into the character’s cosplays. Find some hacks on how to get down some of the tricky details without too much effort. Always allot a budget and never ever overspend on anything, unless it could be an investment with returns. (the last bit is a warning for non-earning enthusiasts like myself). Last but not the least, enjoy every bit of it, and have fun. Its one of the few lemons life gives us, cherish it.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
All the major league cosplayers, both Indian and international. My Instagram feed is half full of cosplay, pets share the rest, the forever inspiring fanbase and cosplay communities I’m a part of. Those guys are a moral boost lifeline.
What are you working on next?
Long list, not sure how much of it will get done, but as of now, either a Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden series) or a Gyrados Gijinka for Japan Habba that’s going happen at Bangalore during Feb’17. Nothing yet, the list of want to do cosplays keep increasing, though.
